To understand pool ownership in Texas, we looked at homes sold in the North Texas area for the last year, ending in June 2024. The data we used includes almost 28,000 homes across 29 cities in North Texas.
All the cities in our data are suburbs of Dallas. The data does not include a high density urban center like Dallas, nor does it include smaller towns in Texas that are not near an urban center.
Only the sale of existing homes was included in our analysis. New construction home sales were filtered out.
We then categorized each house by size and broke them into buckets of 500 square feet, from sub 1000 to over 4000 square feet. For each size category, we wanted to see what percentage of the houses in that category had pools.
The data clearly shows pool ownership increases with house size, as expected. Only 1.5% of houses < 1000 square feet are sold with a pool, while almost 62% of homes > 4000 square feet have pools.
The size category containing the largest number of sold houses is the 1500 - 2000 square foot range, which accounts for 24.5% of the houses sold in North Texas. Only 9% of houses in that size range have a pool.
Of all the houses sold with a pool, 52.3% of them were > 3000 square feet, even though only 24.5% of sold houses fall in this size range.
The graph below shows the same data from the table above: pool ownership (primary axis) and the percentage of homes for a given size range on the secondary axis.
